An defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been advised to avoid discussing classified matters in any cars.
Security Guidance for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a concern in every modern cars.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Wider Security Context
This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
The broader defence situation underscores the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including transport use to discussions habits.
