Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
